10. A Rose Is A Rose! A Kid's Guide To Stratford-upon-Avon, UK - Penelope Dyan

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: 8.60  - Click book title for availability and further details

It may have been Gertrude Stein who said, “A rose is a rose,” as she sat around contemplating life with Ernest Hemingway and other greats, but it was William Shakespeare who gave her the idea by first saying, “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” In fact, when you think of everything that Shakespeare has contributed to not only literature, but to the development of the English language, itself, it is mind boggling! As dead as a doornail, as good luck would have it, as pure as the driven snow, and even the phrase ‘fancy free,’ are all said to originate from the works of the great William Shakespeare. This is what Penelope Dyan had in mind as she traveled through the small town of Stratford-upon-Avon, to see (not so much a place) as to get a feel of this place that inspired the life and times of William Shakespeare. Written in verse, so kids can also practice reading skills by shouting what comes next in the text, and conveying a very positive message, this book is also accompanied by the photography of John D. Weigand, making this book a travel guide of a very different kind that entertains as it encourages kids to think. There is also a music video on the Bellissimavideo YouTube Channel that goes along with this book to further enhance the learning experience.

11. A Royal Residence--A Kid's Guide To Windsor Castle - Penelope Dyan

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: 9.60  - Click book title for availability and further details

Windsor Castle was built by William the Conqueror after the Norman conquest in 1066. He built a ring of fortifications within a short distance of one another for easy reinforcements. Windsor Castle, one of this ring of fortifications, was strategically important because it was close to both the River Thames, a key medieval route into London, and Windsor! Windsor Castle was not built as a a royal residence. The first king to use it as such was Henry I. Henry II came to the throne in 1154 and added his touches by building and modifying the residence between 1165 and 1179. He replaced the wooden palisade surrounding the upper ward with a stone wall interspersed with square towers and built the first King’s Gate, among other things. But this is not the important part of going to this place. The reason a kid comes here is to dream of princes, palaces and kings, and to see one of the castles in Europe, built in medieval times that is still used by royalty to this very day. Use this book when you visit Windsor Castle in person and see what other things you can stuff between its covers, such as your own postcards, your tickets, notes, etc; because this is what you are supposed to do with these travel books! You are supposed to use them as a stepping stone to make your way through time and history. All of these books are intended as a learning experience, not to spoon feed a bunch of boring facts, but to encourage additional research and questioning from even the youngest child, so that when they visit any of these places they will shout aloud with delight, “I know what that is! I saw it in my book!” And this is why photographer John D. Weigand and award winning author, and former teacher, and attorney Penelope Dyan again combine their special talents and efforts to give you a small peak inside a very royal world.

13. A Step In Time--A Kid's Guide To Ephesus, Turkey - Penelope Dyan

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: 9.60  - Click book title for availability and further details

Izmir,Turkey is an exciting place to visit, full of history and culture and more facts than you could ever possibly keep inside your head, so the best thing to do when you go to this place is to simply soak it in, relax and take a step back in time as you explore this part of Turkey, which is actually a part of Asia. The Turks will tell you that people who are from this part of Turkey in Asia were the first settlers of America, the first Native Americans. They will tell you that it was their ancestors who crossed the Bering Strait during the ice age, and that their people are Nomadic and to them at that time, it made perfect sense. The problem was the ice that made up the bridge to America melted, and they could not come home. Looking at the traditional rugs (as you will see in this book) lend credence to this theory, because the art of the weave and the manner of the weaving, dying and creation of the rugs of the Navajo and these Nomadic Turks (today) look almost exactly the same. Travel through this book's pages and take a glimpse at Izmir Turkey with award winning writer, attorney and former teacher, Penelope Dyan and master photographer John D. Weigand, and behold the magic of Turkey!

17. Adventures of Katie Calf on Far-A-Way Farm - Cecelia Davis

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: 11.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

The Adventures of Katie Calf came about as a result of visiting with my cousin, Robert Lee Matteson who had a farm in Fulton, MO. A man of very few words, he came into the living room where I was and began telling me about a cow he had that was carrying twin calves. He knew the cow was about to deliver and went into the field to see if he could find her. He found one of the calves and led it to find the mother. The mother cow rejected the new calf because she already had a calf nursing from her udder. That night, as I lay in bed, the story of Katie Calf took form. Katie Finds a Friend and The Pond also resulted from listening to Robert Lee tell about other things happening on the farm to other animals. The remainder stories about Katie Calf and her friends were Cecelia's imagination. Cecelia and her husband, Paul were children directors at the Raytown Assembly of God church in Raytown, MO for five years. They now live in Warsaw, MO. Other books by Cecelia S. Davis can be seen by going to www.ceceliadavisbooks.com.

19. Ain't Nothing But a Man My Quest to Find The Real John Henry (Large Print 16pt) - Marc AronsonScott Reynolds Nelson

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: 16.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

Who was the real John Henry? The story of this legendary African - American figure has come down to us in so many songs, stories, and plays, that the facts are often lost. Historian Scott Nelson brings John Henry alive for young readers in his personal quest for the ''''true story'''' of the man behind the myth. Nelson presents the famous folk song as a mystery to be unraveled, identifying the embedded clues within the lyrics, which he examines to uncover many surprising truths. He investigates the legend and reveals the real John Henry in this beautifully illustrated book.
Nelson's narrative is multilayered, interweaving the story of the building of the railroads, the period of Reconstruction, folk tales, American mythology, and an exploration of the tradition of work songs and their evolution into blues and rock and roll. This is also the story of the author's search for the flesh - and - blood man who became an American folk hero; Nelson gives a first - person account of how the historian works, showing history as a process of discovery. Readers rediscover an African - American folk hero. We meet John Henry, the man who worked for the railroad, driving steel spikes. When the railroad threatens to replace workers with a steam - powered hammer, John Henry bets that he can drive the beams into the ground faster than the machine. He wins the contest, but dies in the effort.
Nelson's vibrant text, combined with archival images, brings a new perspective and focus to the life and times of this American legend.
