Mary Heaton Vorse or Mary Heaton Vorse O'Brien (October 11, 1874 - 1966) was a U.S. suffragette, journalist, labor activist, theatre patron, and feminist. She became one of the most popular writers of women's fiction in the U.S. As a labor journalist and war correspondent, she traveled to Lenin's Moscow and Hitler's Germany. She was outspokenly active in peace and social justice causes, such as women's suffrage, civil rights, pacifism (specifically including opposition to World War I), socialism, child labor, infant mortality, labor disputes, and affordable housing. She was instrumental in forming the Women's Peace Party in January 1915 in Washington, D.C. Newspapers and journals she wrote for included the New York Post, New York World, McCall's, Harper's Weekly, Atlantic Monthly, The Masses, New Masses, New Republic, and McClure's Magazine, as well as various news services. She participated in and reported on the Lawrence textile strike, the steel strike of 1919, the textile workers strike of 1934, and coal strikes in Harlan County, Kentucky. She was also a popular novelist for several decades and published poetry as well. Her writing helped her raise three children without a husband. "I love my golden wings and I want to fly right into the sun until they are all draggled and battered,' wrote Vorse in 1896. A rebel at a young age, she fled her wealthy New England family and settled in Greenwich Village in the early 1900s. Vorse was intimately involved with the political, cultural, and feminist leaders of the Left. Her commitment to feminism led to her presence at women's rallies in Europe and America; her unique contribution to the journalism of her time was to give consistent attention to the special concerns of women and their role in the labor movement.

NATIONAL BESTSELLER

The long-awaited memoir from John Fogerty, the legendary singer-songwriter and creative force behind Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Creedence Clearwater Revival is one of the most important and beloved bands in the history of rock, and John Fogerty wrote, sang, and produced their instantly recognizable classics: "Proud Mary," "Bad Moon Rising," "Born on the Bayou," and more. Now he reveals how he brought CCR to number one in the world, eclipsing even the Beatles in 1969. By the next year, though, Creedence was falling apart; their amazing, enduring success exploded and faded in just a few short years.

FORTUNATE SON takes readers from Fogerty's Northern California roots, through Creedence's success and the retreat from music and public life, to his hard-won revival as a solo artist who finally found love.

In his memoir, A Certain Risk, author Paul Richardson reminds you that the Creator designed you to engage the complexities of your world with creative solutions. Rather than offering a series of how-to steps, Richardson offers you a refreshing vision of what a Spirit-fueled life looks like-a vision that sees Christianity as a fluid, innovative call to love. Many of us lead frenzied lives-but feel we are going nowhere. Every day you may be asking yourself: "How can I become a voice of hope when the problems are so great? How can I envision my circumstances through God's eyes and respond to others with the passions of his heart when the dry details of the day take over? How do I begin to live a deeper, richer faith that unleashes God's transforming work in and through me?" Drawing on stories from his life as a change specialist in the world's largest Muslim country, Richardson explores what causes you to be pinned down under life's fluctuating circumstances, personal apathy, and disappointment, and he helps you seek the Spirit-fueled life that can set you free. You will come away with a deeper awareness of your dreams, a renewed passion for faith in action, and a richer understanding of how God created you to live ... straight from the heart of the Creator

8. AJ How Alan Jones Climbed to the Top of Formula One (16pt Large Print Edition) - Andrew Clarke with Alan Jones Clarke

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: 32.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

Few names in international motorsport are treated with the same reverence as Alan Jones. When he speaks, they listen. He is one of only two Australians to win the Formula One World Drivers' Championship, and the first driver to do it for the now famous Williams team. His efforts brought Formula One to Australian TV screens, and today he is the voice of Formula One on Network Ten and a board member of the Australian Grand Prix. He is also a Formula One Steward at a couple of Grands Prix a season. AJ is the son of Stan Jones, the winner of the 1959 Australian Grand Prix, and from an early age he wanted to follow in his father's footsteps and race cars. He started with billycarts in Balwyn and climbed to the top of the motorsport tree in Formula One. His career was potted with highs and lows, the latter coming mainly from a lack of financial support compared with his rivals. But when he hit the big time with Williams, he turned that into the 1980 World Championship and all the fame and fortune that brought with it. But he stopped enjoying himself, the cars were painful to drive and he didn't feel he could give it his all, so he quite at the height of his powers. He did return to F1, but he wasn't the same driver and it wasn't the same team and it didn't last. He finished his racing career in touring cars in Australia. His no-nonsense style brought him both admirers and detractors, but he always spoke as he saw it. He still does that today. There are many stories to tell from his racing career, his personal life and business. Some stories that only time allows them to be told.

9. Against All Hope A Memoir of Life in Castro's Gulag (Large Print 16pt), Volume 2 - Armando Valladares

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: 19.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

Against All Hope is Armando Valladares' account of over twenty years in Fidel Castro's tropical gulag. Arrested in 1960 for being philosophically and religiously opposed to communism, Valladares was not released until 1982, by which time he had become one of the world's most celebrated ''prisoners of conscience.'' Interned all those years at the infamous Isla de Pinos prison (from whose windows he watched the failure of the Bay of Pigs invasion), Valladares suffered endless days of violence, putrid food and squalid living conditions, while listening to Castro's firing squads eliminating ''counter revolutionaries'' in the courtyard below his cell. Valladares survived by prayer and by writing poetry whose publication in Europe brought his case to the attention of international figures such as French President Francois Mitterand and to human rights organizations whose constant pressure on the Castro regime finally led to his release. When Against All Hope first appeared, it was immediately compared to Darkness at Noon and other classic prison narratives about the resilience of the human spirit in the face of totalitarianism. Now, with a new introduction by the author, which tells of his life since prison and brings the story of Cuban dissidence up to the case of Elian Gonzalez, Against All Hope is more relevant than ever. This edition is in two volumes. The first volume ISBN is 9781458726230.

10. A Life Underwater (16pt Large Print Edition) - Charlie Veron

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: 32.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

Hailed by David Attenborough, proclaimed a second Charles Darwin, John 'Charlie' Veron almost didn't become a scientist. Disheartened at school, by chance he won a scholarship to a university where he could indulge his passion for the natural world. It was scuba diving that returned him to his childhood love of marine life, and led to a career as a self-taught coral specialist, a field he revolutionised. His discoveries include an original concept of what a species is, and the mechanism that dives their evolution - matters that lie at the heart of conservation. He has named more coral species than anyone in history, becoming widely known as the Godfather of Coral. Charlie has dived most of the world's coral reefs, revelling in their beauty. Here he explains what they say about our planet's past and future, and why it's critical they be protected. And also why it's critical that scholarly independence be safeguarded, for it was the freedom Charlie had as a young scientist - to be wayward, to take risks - that allowed his astonishing breakthroughs. 'Charlie Veron isn't just a coral scientist, he's a pathfinder, a scout who's been sending back dispatches on the future of our planet for decades. If ever there was a moment for Australians to listen up and act on what he's learnt, it's now.' Tim Winton 'Charlie Veron is a ravishing writer. He shares Darwin's passionate love of nature, forensic brilliance, courage and compassion. His gritty, inspiring and thrilling life symbolises why we must all work to save our planet's most spectacular marine environment.' Iain McCalman 'This is the story of one of my heroes, not just a world expert but someone who has been fearless in trying to protect a natural wonder. And to think he became a marine scientist by chance. Charlie's story reads with flair, clarity and a sense of adventure. A compelling book for our turbulent times.' Robyn Williams

13. A Season of Loss, a Lifetime of Forgiveness The Dan Snyder and Dany Heatley Story (Large Print 16pt) - John Manasso

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: 19.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

Dan Snyder narrowly escaped being cut from his junior hockey team for two years in a row. That's hardly the stuff that nhl careers are made of. But Snyder earned his spot on the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers roster through sheer force of will and strength of character, even though scouts thought the odds were against him. Those who knew Snyder describe him as the kind of person others naturally gravitated towards. One of those people was Dany Heatley, college star, All - Star, and marked one of the nhl's next great players. On September 29, 2003, while driving down a treacherous Atlanta road with Snyder, Heatley lost control of his car. Snyder was injured, and died in hospital six days later. The lives of his family, friends, and teammates changed forever, as they searched for meaning and healing. Meanwhile, authorities in Atlanta charged Heatley with vehicular homicide. Snyder's family, however, took a path of forgiveness and reconciliation - a path that is ingrained in the Mennonite tradition from which they hail. While some might lash out against an easy target, the Snyders invited Heatley and his parents into their lives in an effort to make peace with their grief. This paperback edition contains an afterword by the Snyder family.

14. An American Demon A Memoir (Large Print 16pt) - Jack Grisham

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: 24.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

An American Demon is Jack Grisham's story of depravity and redemption, terror and spiritual deliverance. While Grisham is best known as the raucous and provocative front man of the pioneer hardcore punk band TSOL (True Sounds of Liberty), his writing and true life experiences are physically and psychologically more complex, unsettling, and violent than those of Bret Easton Ellis and Chuck Palahniuk.
Eloquently disregarding the prefabricated formulas of the drunk - to - sober, bad - to - good tale, this is an entirely new kind of life lesson: summoned through both God and demons, while settling within eighties hardcore punk culture and its radical - to - the - core (and most assuredly non - evangelical) parables, Grisham leads us, cleverly, gorgeously, between temporal violence and bigger - picture spirituality toward something very much like a path to salvation and enlightenment. An American Demon flourishes on both extremes, as a scary hardcore punk memoir and as a valuable message to souls navigating through an overly materialistic and woefully self - absorbed ''me first'' modern society.
An American Demon conveys anger and truth within the perfect setting, using a youth rebellion that changed the world to open doors for this level of brash destruction. Told from the point of view of a seminal member of the American Punk movement - doused in violence, rebellion, alcoholism, drug abuse, and ending with beautiful lessons of sobriety and absolution - this book is as harrowing and life - affirming as anything you're ever going to read.

16. A Premier's State (Large Print 16pt) - Steve Bracks

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: 24.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

'In May 1994, while I was going through pre - selection for the seat of Williamstown, I sat down at my desk at home and I wrote a note. I was thirty - nine years old and in that note I mapped out what I hoped would happen in my life.' By the time he was forty - eight, Steve Bracks had achieved the goal he'd set himself nine years earlier. He was premier of Victoria. In A Premier's State he reflects on his ambition to make a difference, and how he reached his goal. He talks about his early childhood growing up in a conservative but impassioned family that supported the Democratic Labor Party, and about his gradual evolution from left - wing university radical to pragmatic centre - left premier. He reveals for the first time the background to his decision to take the party's leadership from his friend John Brumby in 1999 - then to hand it back to John in 2007 when he sensationally resigned from office. He gives insights into how to run a successful government and how to manage the factions, and talks about everything from the impact of public life on his family, to forming minority government with independents.

17. A Simple Memoir of My Early Years - Gertrud Jackle

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: 40.00  - Click book title for availability and further details

To the best of my recollection, this is the story of my early years. Like me, it is simple and direct. It was inspired by my daughter Erika, who worked hard to gather the details, and later prepared for publication by my son, Rodney. Many of the essential stories were contributed by my brother Julian, whose memories and experiences were broader than my own. Without them, this memoir could not have been written.

I never intended this project to be a history lesson—just a collection of memories, feelings, challenges, circumstances, and inspirations that led me to Canada, where the family life we all share together began.

Remember This:

I want to pass a message along to my children, grandchildren, and hopefully great-grandchildren:

• Value others on their potential, not their history.

• Never give up. Always hold on to hope. Things will always get better if you do. Always.

• Despite the challenges of my life, I believe I was, and still am, very lucky. I have always felt this—that a guardian angel was watching over me every moment.
