2. The Man Inside The Bloodiest Outbreak (16pt Large Print Edition) - Graham Apthorpe

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £27.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

The War in the Pacific has turned; thousands of the previously invincible Japanese soldiers are now being captured in New Guinea and interned at the Cowra Prisoner of War Camp. Unlike other POWs, the traditional Japanese Bushido Code and their fanaticism leaves them ill-equipped for surrender and imprisonment. Ashamed, subdued and sullen, one man, Second Lieutenant Maseo Naka is an exception. Obstructing the Australian authorities at every turn, he was the first Japanese soldier to escape from Cowra. This action becomes the precursor for the more than 1000 Japanese prisoners who escape in the bloodiest Breakout of World War II that ultimately saw 234 Japanese and four Australian guards killed. His escape and the defiance, guilt, and shame that motivated it, led to his court-martial. Naka nevertheless stands-out as very human, another tragic victim of the global inferno that was World War II. Adhering to the Samurai Code of Bushido, he doggedly undertakes actions that he views as necessary for the maintenance of his ''honour''. Through the insights of those around Naka, together with new research including the personal accounts of Australian interrogators, the author shows how this handsome loner provided the impetus for the dramatic events in the early hours of August 5, 1944 where hundreds of Japanese soldiers stormed the Camp defences for honour, or death!

'His courage, determination, skill and his undoubtedly outstanding ability as a leader are an inspiration to his Wing and worthy of the highest praise.' Extract from DSO citation Clive Caldwell was officially attributed with 27 ½ victories and became Australia's highest scoring fighter pilot in World War II. In addition, he became an ace in both the Middle East and Pacific theatres - the only Australian pilot to attain this status. Kristen Alexander has had unrivalled access to Caldwell's personal papers as well as official and privately held records. She vividly brings to life Caldwell's aerial exploits and presents a man driven to carry out his duty. Originally considered an individualist, Caldwell became a fine fighter pilot and a dedicated leader, much loved by those he commanded. But he did not wear the restrictions of the RAAF well and, despite his achievements, endured public inquiry over liquor trading and the so-called 'Morotai Mutiny'. Even so, he continued to be well-regarded and respected by the public. This biography is a celebration of Caldwell's military achievements. It details his rise from a green fighter pilot to Wing leader and includes striking details of his air battles. It also includes unprecedented discussion of the Barry Inquiry and Caldwell's court-martial.

9. NORMITA SUÁREZ y JESÚS ALVARIÑO TRAYECTORIA Y LEGADO. Precursores de la radio y la televisión en Cuba y Latinoamérica - Lourdes Alvariño Castiñeira

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £22.50  - Click book title for availability and further details

Normita Suarez and Jesus Alvariño were two popular artists from radio and television in Cuba as well as in exile, an exile that was imposed by the lack of freedom in their homeland. Jesus was an important artist from the 1940s, 50s and 60s in programs like Tamakún, Los tres Villalobos (written by Armando Couto, it was for years the most listened to radio program in Cuba and other Latin American countries), La Taberna de Pedro, where he played “Pedro el Polaco” (already on television). Normita Suárez was also an artist from a young age and excelled in many programs such as «Casos y cosas de casa» (Cases and Household Things) as well as others. She also starred in theater and movies.

But not only in Cuba were these two artists well know —both crossed borders and were recognized throughout Latin America. In the wide photo gallery included in this book, you can see the friendships they had with the greatest artists of their time. They also stood out for their Christian ideals, not only in their personal and family life but also in their evangelizing task. That is why the letter from Mons. Agustín Román, Auxiliary Bishop of Miami, is included on the back cover.

This book is not only about the lives of these talented artists, it is also a history of Cuban radio and television because, through them, we are presented with many of the best Cuban artists and their most important moments. It includes a selection of articles by Jesús Alvariño with current themes, humor and Christian reflections.

Lourdes Alvariño Suárez de Castiñeira was the editor of this book. She not only saves the memory of her parents for posterity, but also that of that golden age of Cuban radio and television

11. The Family File (Large Print 16pt) - Mark Aarons

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £24.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

In early 1965 at age thirteen, Mark Aarons came under the 'adverse notice' of ASIO, which opened volume one of his nine-volume security file. Mark was following in the footsteps of his father, Laurie Aarons, whose 85-volume file commenced in the early 1930s when he was fourteen. For four generations the Aarons family were 'subversive revolutionaries', avowed communists who challenged the established constitutional order. Having obtained access to his family's ASIO files - the largest collection in the nation's history - Mark Aarons combines their meticulous chronicles with his family's own accounts to tell a political tale of revolution and dissent, idealism and intrigue. It is also an intimate story of life under surveillance, a reflection on communism and its legacy, and on what it was to be a radical in Australia in eventful times.

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £19.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

Born in Gambo, Newfoundland, Joseph (''Joey'') Smallwood (1900 - 1991) spent his life championing the worth and potential of his native province. Although he was a successful journalist and radio personality, Smallwood is best known for his role in bringing Newfoundland into Confederation with Canada in 1949, believing that such an action would secure an average standard of living for Newfoundlanders. He was rightfully dubbed the ''only living Father of Confederation'' in his lifetime and was premier of the province for twenty - three years. During much of the last part of the twentieth century, Smallwood remained a prominent player in the story of Newfoundland and Labrador's growth as a province. Later in life he put himself in debt in order to complete his Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador, the only project of its kind in Canada up to that point. InJoey Smallwood: Schemer and Dreamer, Ray Argyle reexamines the life of this incredible figure in light of Newfoundland's progress in recent years, and measures his vision against its new position as a province of prosperity rather than poverty.
