105. Steam Train! All The Way To Canterbury, England - Penelope Dyan

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £9.20  - Click book title for availability and further details

A steam train is a train that is pulled by a head locomotive that produces power through a steam engine. The purpose of a steam train was to pull freight cars and passenger coaches along railroad tracks. All the Steam locomotives are fueled by coal, wood or oil. The fuel is burned to produce steam in a boiler, and this is what drives the steam engine so that it can pull the train cars. Fuel and water supplies are also carried on the train. Beginning in Britain, steam locomotives dominated railway transportation from the start of the 19th century, until the middle of the 20th century. They were gradually improved and developed in their over 150 years of use. Starting in about 1930, other types of engines were developed, and steam locomotives were gradually superseded by the diesel and electric locomotives. So what this means is that they basically stopped using them in favor of more modern means of transport, including the more modern trains. A very fun thing to do when you are in England is to see if you can take a trip on a steam train, because you will be sitting and traveling in a real piece of something that came right from the history books! Try to imagine all the people who might have sat right here you are sitting. Write a story about it. Take some pictures, and put your tickets in this book and make it your very own. See if you can see some of the things Penelope Dyan and John D. Weigand saw when they conceived this book! Written by the award winning writer, attorney, and former K-12 teacher, Penelope Dyan, and accompanied by the always wonderful photographs of professional photographer and videographer, John D. Weigand, even if you don't get a chance to ride this train, you can still get a bird's eye view of it through the words and photos in this book!

106. Stories Behind the Greatest Hits of Christmas (Large Print 16pt) - Ace Collins

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £16.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

You know these songs by heart. They're the ''greatest hits'' of Christmas. But do you know the fascinating, inspirational stories behind them - who wrote them and how they came to be? In his latest book, Ace Collins reveals the stories behind the greatest hits of Christmas - all the songs you have enjoyed for generations. For example, as the story goes, jazz great Mel Torme wrote ''The Christmas Song'' after visiting a friend in California, who, longing to escape California's heat for the cold winters of his New England, doodled these now-famous phrases on his spiral pad: ''Chestnuts roasting Jack Frost nipping Yuletide carols '' Torme saw those words and one of the most famous Christmas songs of all time, first recorded by Nat King Cole, was born. Within these pages, you'll discover the origins of such famous Christmas songs as ''Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,'' ''Winter Wonderland,'' ''White Christmas,'' ''Little Drummer Boy,'' ''Feliz Navidad,'' ''O Holy Night,'' and two dozen others. Although not yet as famous as the Christmas songs of which he writes (he's working on that), Collins's many books have sold tens of thousands of copies and have become treasured family classics, read and enjoyed by young and old alike. His new book is a treasure-trove of the kind of magic that makes Christmas the beloved holiday it is. This is Ace Collins at his storytelling best which means it's sure to become a ''greatest hit'' with your family, too.

109. The Art of Alex Kurtagic 1989 - 2017 - Alex Kurtagic

Largeprint (Hardback) Our price: £52.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

Spanning nearly 30 years of the art of Alex Kurtagic, the present volume showcases five periods in the artist’s life. Mainly known for book and album cover illustration, including album covers for Black Metal bands such as Troll, Tormentor, and Dimmu Borgir, Kurtagic’s art explores the macabre, the satirical, and the sublime in a style that has been described as ‘filmic’ and ‘delightfully twisted’. Kurtagic’s work has been exhibited in Caracas, London, and Madrid; featured in Creative Review Choice, from among winning illustrators; and featured in Neil Aldis and James Sherry’s Heavy Metal Thunder: Album Covers that Rocked the World.

With a preface and introduction by the artist, the collection either digs into the background story or flies into deranged fictionalised vignettes inspired by the images. George Orwell or Louis-Ferdinand Céline may occassionally come to mind. Sometimes satirical, sometimes apocalyptic, the vignettes present a sarcastic meditation on the alarming, aggressive, or infuriating aspects of modern-day society. Readers should expect to be wrong-footed frequently, uncertain as to what might come with the next turn of the page.

110. The Ayyubid Era Art and Architecture in Medieval Syria - Abd al-Razzaq MoazYasser TabbaaZena Takieddine

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £19.90  - Click book title for availability and further details

This new MWNF Travel Book was conceived not long before the war started. All texts refer to the pre-war situation and are our expression of hope that Syria, a land that witnessed the evolution of civilisation since the beginnings of human history, may soon become a place of peace and the driving force behind a new and peaceful beginning for the entire region. Bilad al-Sham testifies to a thorough and strategic programme of urban reconstruction and reunification during the 12th and 13th centuries. Amidst a period of fragmentation, visionary leadership came with the Atabeg Nur al-Din Zangi. He revived Syria's cities as safe havens to restore order. His most agile Kurdish general, Salah al-Din (Saladin), assumed power after he died and unified Egypt and Sham into one force capable of re-conquering Jerusalem from the Crusaders. The Ayyubid Empire flourished and continued the policy of patronage. Though short-lived, this era held long-lasting resonance for the region. Its recognisable architectural aesthetic - austere, yet robust and perfected ‒ survived until modern times.

The Ayyubid Era: Art and Architecture in Medieval Syria describes eight thematic Itineraries including, among others, the cities of Damascus, Bosra, Homs, Hama, Aleppo and Raqqa.

111. The Bloody Sacrifice - Charlotte Rodgers

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £10.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

The Bloody Sacrifice Charlotte Rodgers is a non denominational magickal practitioner and an animist, and The Bloody Sacrifice is the story of her work with blood. It chronicles her use of road kill and blood in art, ritualised scarification and tattoo work, and the use of venous and menstrual blood in magick. Also included are Charlotte's interviews with tattoo artists; priests from belief systems which utilise blood sacrifice; artists who use their own HIV positive blood as a medium; and those who use mortifications and body modification to effect changes in consciousness and self. All here share a common bond of talent combined with an ability to articulate their beliefs. For example Louis Martinie, a priest in the New Orleans Voodoo Spiritual Temple. Martinie has integrated his Tibetan Buddhist beliefs into his Voodoo practice and in doing so shows how personal spiritual evolution can effect change within a syncretic religion. As a blood related illness affected various parts of Charlotte's life, she was given a chance to explore blood ritual in a very different way. Documenting this part of her journey gives an understanding of AIDS, HIV and HCV, and its effect on spirituality and contemporary blood rites. Blood Ritual, with all its history, baggage and dangers holds a power to create change. Whether this power is held within blood and how much impact is created merely by our perception is for the reader to decide. The Bloody Sacrifice is an honest, modern and thought provoking personal insight into an ancient aspect of our spirituality and creativity. The author was born in New Zealand and after many years of travel, fast living and dodgy magick, now leads a life of quiet eccentricity commuting between England and Asia. She creates, exhibits, and occasionally sells art made from road kill and has had articles published in many magazines.

113. The Coen Brothers The Story of Two American Filmmakers (Large Print 16pt) - Josh Levine

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £19.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

Everything you wanted to know about the direction of Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and Barton Fink. A terrified woman plunges a knife through the hand of her pursuer. A leftwing playwright turns to the woman in his bed, only to find a river of blood. A baby, abandoned in the middle of the highway, smiles happily. A professional killer stuffs his partner into a woodchipper while a pregnant cop pulls her gun. Welcome to the world of the Coen Brothers. With the smash success of Fargo (winner of two major Academy Awards), the filmmaking team of Joel and Ethan Coen finally received their deserved recognition. But well before that the two brothers were writing and directing terrific films - from the film - noir thriller Blood Simple, to the comedy Raising Arizona, to the gangster epic Miller's Crossing, to the bizarre Barton Fink. With each film they have surprised fans and critics alike, always refusing to repeat themselves or compromise their independence. Their upcoming George Clooney film, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, due out in October 2000, is one of the most highly anticipated films of the year. While still in their early twenties, Joel and Ethan Coen raised the money for their first film - by knocking on the doors of the wealthy in their native Minnesota. Starring an unknown actress named Frances McDormand (who would later become Joel's wife), it was an art - house hit and allowed the brothers to make Raising Arizona with Nicolas Cage and another Coen brothers discovery, Holly Hunter. But despite their high reputation, the brothers would not make another financially successful picture for years. Were their films just too offbeat and intellectual? And then came Fargo. Here is the story of how two middle - class Minnesota boys have come to write, shoot, and direct some of the most gruesome, exhilarating, and funny films of our time.

114. The Colorful Apocalypse Journeys in Outsider Art (Large Print 16pt) - Greg Bottoms

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £21.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

The Reverend Howard Finster was twenty feet tall, suspended in darkness. Or so he appeared in the documentary film that introduced a teenaged Greg Bottoms to the renowned outsider artist whose death would help inspire him, fourteen years later, to travel the country. Beginning in Georgia with a trip to Finster's famous Paradise Gardens, his journey-of which The Colorful Apocalypse is a masterly chronicle-is an unparalleled look into the lives and visionary works of some of Finster's contemporaries: the self-taught evangelical artists whose beliefs and oeuvres occupy the gray area between madness and Christian ecstasy. With his prodigious gift for conversation and quietly observant storytelling, Bottoms draws us into the worlds of such figures as William Thomas Thompson, a handicapped ex-millionaire who painted a 300-foot version of the book of Revelation; Norbert Kox, an ex-member of the Outlaws biker gang who now lives as a recluse in rural Wisconsin and paints apocalyptic visual parables; and Myrtice West, who began painting to express the revelatory visions she had after her daughter was brutally murdered. These artists' works are as wildly varied as their life stories, but without sensationalizing or patronizing them, Bottoms-one of today's finest young writers-gets at the heart of what they have in common: the struggle to make sense, through art, of their difficult personal histories. In doing so, he weaves a true narrative as powerful as the art of its subjects, a work that is at once an enthralling travelogue, a series of revealing biographical portraits, and a profound meditation on the chaos of despair and the ways in which creativity can help order our lives.

115. The Cowboy's Craving - Diana Fraser

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £17.45  - Click book title for availability and further details

One macho cowboy, one nerdy astronomer... and a heartache that neither could have seen in the stars...

Cowboy Morgan West was raised on his mother's stories of Glencoe and the Mackenzie family who ran it. Heartbroken after a bitter break-up, he decides to see the place and people for himself. He intends to work for one season only, but then he meets Rebecca—a woman he craves and a woman, he believes, he doesn't deserve.

When mysterious Morgan West begins to turn up wherever she is, astronomer Rebecca Mayhew is confused. She can tell anyone who asks how many miles Saturn is from the earth (roughly 746 million) and the likelihood of there being life on another planet (high), but she can't begin to explain in rigorous scientific terms why her fingers itch to caress Morgan's broad muscled back, or why the only calculation on her mind is how long it would take to kiss every square inch of him.

She's confused, yet curious, and Morgan is more than happy to satisfy that curiosity. But instead of their physical relationship clarifying things, Rebecca's nice neat orderly world unravels as both her and Morgan's painful pasts are exposed, revealing secrets that have the potential to explode more than just their own worlds.
