44. Spend A Day With Monet---A Kid's Guide To Giverny, France - Penelope Dyan

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £9.20  - Click book title for availability and further details

For a wonderful day, there is nothing better than visiting Monet's home and garden at Giverny, France. See the gardens Monet sculpted so he could paint impressionist pictures of his beautiful garden, and imagine and try to see what he saw as he painted. Use this book as an introduction and a guide and fill it with your very own pictures, and postcards and notes. And do not forget your camera when you go to Giverny, France. When you look at this book, you can also use it to improve your reading skills, because this is another reason these Penelope Dyan/John D. Weigand books were created. It is written in rhyme, so that you can guess the words that are coming next. Each set of words, on the page opposite the beautiful photographs describes in poetic narrative what you are seeing on the opposite page, and this book is sized especially for little hands and kids' backpacks, so you can take it and compare what you see to the photographs in the book. Penelope Dyan is an award winning author, internationally honored, recognized poet, attorney, artist, vocalist and former teacher; and John D. Weigand is a former director of television engineering and professional photographer, proving once again that Bellissima loves kids!

45. Steam Train! All The Way To Canterbury, England - Penelope Dyan

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £9.20  - Click book title for availability and further details

A steam train is a train that is pulled by a head locomotive that produces power through a steam engine. The purpose of a steam train was to pull freight cars and passenger coaches along railroad tracks. All the Steam locomotives are fueled by coal, wood or oil. The fuel is burned to produce steam in a boiler, and this is what drives the steam engine so that it can pull the train cars. Fuel and water supplies are also carried on the train. Beginning in Britain, steam locomotives dominated railway transportation from the start of the 19th century, until the middle of the 20th century. They were gradually improved and developed in their over 150 years of use. Starting in about 1930, other types of engines were developed, and steam locomotives were gradually superseded by the diesel and electric locomotives. So what this means is that they basically stopped using them in favor of more modern means of transport, including the more modern trains. A very fun thing to do when you are in England is to see if you can take a trip on a steam train, because you will be sitting and traveling in a real piece of something that came right from the history books! Try to imagine all the people who might have sat right here you are sitting. Write a story about it. Take some pictures, and put your tickets in this book and make it your very own. See if you can see some of the things Penelope Dyan and John D. Weigand saw when they conceived this book! Written by the award winning writer, attorney, and former K-12 teacher, Penelope Dyan, and accompanied by the always wonderful photographs of professional photographer and videographer, John D. Weigand, even if you don't get a chance to ride this train, you can still get a bird's eye view of it through the words and photos in this book!

48. The Ayyubid Era Art and Architecture in Medieval Syria - Abd al-Razzaq MoazYasser TabbaaZena Takieddine

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £19.90  - Click book title for availability and further details

This new MWNF Travel Book was conceived not long before the war started. All texts refer to the pre-war situation and are our expression of hope that Syria, a land that witnessed the evolution of civilisation since the beginnings of human history, may soon become a place of peace and the driving force behind a new and peaceful beginning for the entire region. Bilad al-Sham testifies to a thorough and strategic programme of urban reconstruction and reunification during the 12th and 13th centuries. Amidst a period of fragmentation, visionary leadership came with the Atabeg Nur al-Din Zangi. He revived Syria's cities as safe havens to restore order. His most agile Kurdish general, Salah al-Din (Saladin), assumed power after he died and unified Egypt and Sham into one force capable of re-conquering Jerusalem from the Crusaders. The Ayyubid Empire flourished and continued the policy of patronage. Though short-lived, this era held long-lasting resonance for the region. Its recognisable architectural aesthetic - austere, yet robust and perfected ‒ survived until modern times.

The Ayyubid Era: Art and Architecture in Medieval Syria describes eight thematic Itineraries including, among others, the cities of Damascus, Bosra, Homs, Hama, Aleppo and Raqqa.

49. The Bloody Sacrifice - Charlotte Rodgers

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £10.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

The Bloody Sacrifice Charlotte Rodgers is a non denominational magickal practitioner and an animist, and The Bloody Sacrifice is the story of her work with blood. It chronicles her use of road kill and blood in art, ritualised scarification and tattoo work, and the use of venous and menstrual blood in magick. Also included are Charlotte's interviews with tattoo artists; priests from belief systems which utilise blood sacrifice; artists who use their own HIV positive blood as a medium; and those who use mortifications and body modification to effect changes in consciousness and self. All here share a common bond of talent combined with an ability to articulate their beliefs. For example Louis Martinie, a priest in the New Orleans Voodoo Spiritual Temple. Martinie has integrated his Tibetan Buddhist beliefs into his Voodoo practice and in doing so shows how personal spiritual evolution can effect change within a syncretic religion. As a blood related illness affected various parts of Charlotte's life, she was given a chance to explore blood ritual in a very different way. Documenting this part of her journey gives an understanding of AIDS, HIV and HCV, and its effect on spirituality and contemporary blood rites. Blood Ritual, with all its history, baggage and dangers holds a power to create change. Whether this power is held within blood and how much impact is created merely by our perception is for the reader to decide. The Bloody Sacrifice is an honest, modern and thought provoking personal insight into an ancient aspect of our spirituality and creativity. The author was born in New Zealand and after many years of travel, fast living and dodgy magick, now leads a life of quiet eccentricity commuting between England and Asia. She creates, exhibits, and occasionally sells art made from road kill and has had articles published in many magazines.

50. The Cowboy's Craving - Diana Fraser

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £17.45  - Click book title for availability and further details

One macho cowboy, one nerdy astronomer... and a heartache that neither could have seen in the stars...

Cowboy Morgan West was raised on his mother's stories of Glencoe and the Mackenzie family who ran it. Heartbroken after a bitter break-up, he decides to see the place and people for himself. He intends to work for one season only, but then he meets Rebecca—a woman he craves and a woman, he believes, he doesn't deserve.

When mysterious Morgan West begins to turn up wherever she is, astronomer Rebecca Mayhew is confused. She can tell anyone who asks how many miles Saturn is from the earth (roughly 746 million) and the likelihood of there being life on another planet (high), but she can't begin to explain in rigorous scientific terms why her fingers itch to caress Morgan's broad muscled back, or why the only calculation on her mind is how long it would take to kiss every square inch of him.

She's confused, yet curious, and Morgan is more than happy to satisfy that curiosity. But instead of their physical relationship clarifying things, Rebecca's nice neat orderly world unravels as both her and Morgan's painful pasts are exposed, revealing secrets that have the potential to explode more than just their own worlds.

53. The Language of the Blues From Alcorub to Zuzu - Debra Devi

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £16.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

Find out what the words in your favorite blues songs really mean! In The Language of the Blues: From Alcorub to Zuzu (Foreword by Dr. John), rock musician Debra Devi defines 170 blues terms like mojo, hoodoo, buffet flat and killing floor with wild stories and fresh insights from her interviews with such blues stars as Hubert Sumlin, Robert Jr. Lockwood, Henry Gray, Little Milton Campbell, Bob Margolin, Jody Williams, Robben Ford, Jimmie Vaughan, and more. Devi combines her interviews with in-depth research into etymology, African language, voodoo and the origins of blues, rock and jazz. The result is a lively read Reuters calls "a witty, bawdy and fascinating dictionary." The Language of the Blues has received the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award for Outstanding Book on Music

The Language of the Blues includes more than 30 photos (17 color) and a remarkable foreword by Dr. John, who helped Devi uncover the illegal gambling origins of terms like "gig" and "axe." The Language of the Blues has earned back-cover praise from Bonnie Raitt, Joe Bonamassa, former Muddy Waters guitarist Bob Margolin, producer Hal Willner, and even Ministry singer Al Jourgensen! "What a great resource, as fascinating as it is informative. Debra Devi's passion for the blues shines through," says Bonnie Raitt. Joe Bonamassa adds, "Devi's book will teach you what you really need to know about blues history and where the blues are coming from." Al Jourgensen notes: "Finally one can understand the mechanics behind the overwhelming viscera of the Blues. Debra Devi's work is a true guide book to the soul."

Blues Revue deems The Language of the Blues "an essential purchase for scholars and fans" and New York Times columnist Shelton Ivany says, "If you have any questions about blues songs, lyrics, musicians or events, chances are you will find your answers in this unparalleled publication."

"Don't think that The Language of the Blues might read like a dictionary or reference book," explains former Muddy Waters guitarist Bob Margolin. "There's no plot, but you can open it at random and fall into the world of your favorite blues songs, finding out more about the lyrics than you would by guessing from context. I learned a lot more about the blues music I love."

Devi is an American Blues Scene contributing editor and former Blues Revue associate editor. She is also an accomplished rock singer and guitarist. Visit her at www.debradevi.com
