22. THE INVISIBLE COLLEGE What a Group of Scientists Has Discovered About UFO Influence on the Human Race - Jacques Vallee

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £10.00  - Click book title for availability and further details

What is the nature of unidentified aerial phenomena? Forty years ago a small cadre of dedicated researchers began actively investigating cases, interviewing witnesses, and exchanging data through a small, informal network of international contacts. Today this low-profile network, or "invisible college," has grown into a larger, multi-nation volunteer research effort joined by many individuals. But the questions first raised 40 years ago remain current-and unanswered. "I believe that a powerful force has influenced the human race in the past and is again influencing it now. Does this force represent alien intervention, or does it originate entirely within human consciousness? This is the question that forms the basis of the work of the Invisible College of UFO researchers." - Jacques Vallee "THE INVISIBLE COLLEGE is unlike any other UFO book ever written. Dr. Vallee questions what everybody else takes for granted, doubts what everybody believes, drenches us with data that doesn't 'fit' any of the theories of either the True Believers or the die-hard non-believers and then offers a hypothesis on his own." - Robert Anton Wilson "An important book-not only are UFOs and psychic events inextricably linked, as Dr. Vallee so nicely points out, but neither can be understood without an appreciation of the role of myth, tradition, and belief system. Must reading for the serious student of contemporary events." - Edgar Mitchell "Certainly one of the most interesting, thought-provoking books so far written on UFOs." - Colin Wilson Dr. Jacques Vallee began his professional life as an astronomer at the Paris Observatory in 1961. While on the staff of the French Space Committee, he witnessed the destruction of the tracking tapes of unknown objects orbiting the earth, initiating a lifelong interest in the UFO phenomenon. Vallee arrived in the U.S. in 1962 and worked in astronomy at the University of Texas at Austin before receiving a Ph.D. in computer science from Northwestern University in 1967. There he became a close associate of J. Allen Hynek, then scientific consultant for the U.S. Air Force on Project Blue Book-the result was The Invisible College. Dr. Vallee is presently a venture capitalist living in San Francisco. His website is www.jacquesvallee.com.

26. The Forgotten Islands (Large Print 16pt) - Michael Veitch

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £23.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

Between mainland Australia and Tasmania lie the islands of Bass Strait - cold, dark, pounded by atrocious weather and hardly ever visited. But they have long fascinated adventurer, bird watcher and media personality Michael Veitch. Captivated since childhood by the story of Deal Island's mysterious disappearing fisherman, Veitch set off on a personal odyssey among the islands, plagued by the difficulties of travel (including numerous forms of transport designed to make you ill), of isolation and of stinging nettles. He's rewarded, however, with wonderfully strange gems to ass to Australia's treasury of stories: from Matthew Flinders' early explorations in an absurdly small boat to an evangelical clergyman and his good ship Freak; from strange underwater creatures to places believed to have never before felt the impact of a human foot. The Forgotten Islands is full of tales of shipwrecks and sealers, brutality and extermination, folly and heroism, shining a light on this lost part of Australia and its extraordinary history.

28. Thatcher's Britain The politics And Social Upheaval Of The Thatcher Era (Large Print 16pt) - Richard Vinen

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £24.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

Britain's first female prime minister remains a political figure of almost mythical proportions. Margaret Thatcher divided a political nation, became a cultural icon, and was the longest - serving prime minister of the twentieth century. Her period in government coincided with extraordinary changes in British society and in Britain's place in the world. Thatcher's Britain tells the story of Thatcherism for a generation with no personal memories of the 80s, as well as for those who want to revisit the polemics of their youth. It seeks to rescue Thatcher from being seen as John the Baptist for Tony Blair, stresses that Thatcherism was not a timeless phenomenon, but rooted in the 70s and 80s, and focuses our attention away from her legend, to what her government actually did during this tumultuous period in British history.

Mary Heaton Vorse or Mary Heaton Vorse O'Brien (October 11, 1874 - 1966) was a U.S. suffragette, journalist, labor activist, theatre patron, and feminist. She became one of the most popular writers of women's fiction in the U.S. As a labor journalist and war correspondent, she traveled to Lenin's Moscow and Hitler's Germany. She was outspokenly active in peace and social justice causes, such as women's suffrage, civil rights, pacifism (specifically including opposition to World War I), socialism, child labor, infant mortality, labor disputes, and affordable housing. She was instrumental in forming the Women's Peace Party in January 1915 in Washington, D.C. Newspapers and journals she wrote for included the New York Post, New York World, McCall's, Harper's Weekly, Atlantic Monthly, The Masses, New Masses, New Republic, and McClure's Magazine, as well as various news services. She participated in and reported on the Lawrence textile strike, the steel strike of 1919, the textile workers strike of 1934, and coal strikes in Harlan County, Kentucky. She was also a popular novelist for several decades and published poetry as well. Her writing helped her raise three children without a husband. "I love my golden wings and I want to fly right into the sun until they are all draggled and battered,' wrote Vorse in 1896. A rebel at a young age, she fled her wealthy New England family and settled in Greenwich Village in the early 1900s. Vorse was intimately involved with the political, cultural, and feminist leaders of the Left. Her commitment to feminism led to her presence at women's rallies in Europe and America; her unique contribution to the journalism of her time was to give consistent attention to the special concerns of women and their role in the labor movement.
