1. Torn Apart The Nigerian Civil War and Its Impact - Françoise UGOCHUKWU

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £17.27  - Click book title for availability and further details

The Nigerian Civil War, 1967-1970 (also known as the Biafran War) has been described as a 'forgotten war'. Yet it led to the birth of the NGO Doctors without Borders / Médecins sans frontières and equipped journalists with the intercultural skills they later used in their coverage of other African conflicts. The Biafran conflict equally ended up strengthening the special relationship between France and Nigeria. From 1970 in particular, the Nigerian education sector was taken up with a wave of francophilia, which boosted the teaching of French in Language programmes at the secondary school level. The Civil War, which ravaged the South-Eastern part of the federation, was, above all, a collective experience which inspired poets, novelists and playwrights - Achebe, Soyinka, Okigbo, Saro-Wiwa, Okpewho, Adichie and others, while bringing about a massive religious revival which affected the whole region. The war mobilised politicians and NGOs, it changed the country and brought it into the limelight. This book reveals, through the study of oral genres, radio bulletins and the impact of the conflict on literature and the Web, the human history of the war, the role played by the media and the deep scar the conflict left on the bodies and minds of survivors. _____________________ Françoise UGOCHUKWU was born in Valence (France) in 1949. She moved to Britain in 1995 after twenty-four years of lecturing at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and currently holds a post at the Open University. She is an Africanist with active links to the CNRS. Her research field is in Comparative Literature, with a focus on Nigeria and Orature. Her pioneering work in the field and longstanding contribution to the strengthening of cultural and educational ties between France and Nigeria awarded her the national distinction of Chevalier des Palmes Académiques in 1994.

4. The Memory of Salt (Large Print 16pt) - Alice Melike Ulgezer

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £24.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

Ali's father is a Turkish circus musician performing in Kabul when Ali's mother, a young pediatrician from Melbourne, meets him in a bar. He plays the trumpet, the saz, the flute, hears voices that urge him to violence, sees angels in the skies and djinns in the street, inscribes prayers and invocations on the walls of his room, and across the suburb. Ulgezer offers a remarkable portrait of this crazed visionary, a madman and a mystic, intoxicated with hashish and Sufism, who wrecks the family, but is also an enchanted being. Ali's mother has grown up on Australia's outback frontiers - their courtship takes them from Afghanistan across Iran to Turkey and then to London where Ali is born. The novel is Ali's coming to terms with this meeting of two cultures that are at once so similar and so separate.

5. The Line A Story of a Hunter, a Breed and Their Bond (Large Print 16pt) - William A. Urseth

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £19.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

William Urseth loves dogs, and even more, he loves what these dogs can do. Striking a perfect point, flushing grouse for hours, retrieving perfectly to hand; moments can steal your breath away. William Urseth loves bird hunting, and spending days in the field with a great dog can warm your heart. William Urseth loves business, and the chance to develop a perfect line of German Shorthair Pointers could not be missed.
William Urseth is known for his hunting around the world on his TV show, Quest for the One, on the Outdoor Life Network, and on his Menz radio show in eastern Canada, but his stories center on his Minnesota Horse and Hunt Club, his kennel and dogs there, and their hunts in the northern midwest of the U.S.
His decision to breed German Shorthairs brought him to J ger and Cent, who he bought after hiring an expert to find the best of this breed in the world. From these two, he would create The Line, generations of dogs that would not only win countless tournaments, but also create countless highs and heartbreaks as they spend their lives in the homes and hunts of William, his wife, and his friends.
These stories are like the dogs they recount; they will steal your breath away, warm your heart, and should not be missed.

9. Passionate God (Large Print 16pt) - Kenneth C. Ulmer

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £16.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

Many people envision God as a strict father figure - stern, detached, exacting and vengeful - lacking feelings and emotions. Yet, once we come to understand that God actually expresses a wide range of passion, we will relate to Him on a much more chuman level and start seeing Him for who He really is. In Passionate God, Kenneth Ulmer helps us understand and appreciate the chumanity of God as expressed through His emotions: joy, sympathy, grief, care, laughter, jealousy, humor, anger and, of course, love. This book will change the way people view and relate to God because it reveals a Creator intimately involved with His beloved creation and is more like us than we ever imagined.

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £11.45  - Click book title for availability and further details

The Stones of Home is a bardic tale of magic and dragons, of love and pain, of epic battles and loss; and touches the very heart of what it is to be human. After a century and a half of isolation, the surviving Mages of Haven reunite to combat a rising power. Their journey and fight for freedom lead them through many skirmishes and adventures, to confront an old rivalry between their allies, whom they must unite to defeat their common enemy. Rowan Utting's work is poetic, narrative, mythic, reflective and musical. Along with the language, 'Alamard', The Stones of Home contains the author's graphic working notes, embedded songs, music, lexicon and grammar. This stunning advanced literary work was completed when Rowan Utting had just turned sixteen. More books are under way. Not a novel about youth: it explores the lives and emotions of people with magical powers, their place in different societies and the constant war waged by other creatures. The Stones of Home is epic in scope and set in contemporary Scotland and Ireland. It is literary, humorous, poignant, violent, philosophical and memorable. 255pp. A library "must have." Suitability 12+ (contains some violence).
