7. Planet Obesity How We're Eating Ourselves and the Planet to Death: How We're Eating Ourselves and the Planet to Death (Large Print 16 - Garry Egger and Boyd Swinburn

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £16.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

Obesity is 'collateral damage in the battle for modernity'. It's an unintended but unavoidable consequence of economic progress. Obesity is not a disease but a signal. It's the canary in the coalmine, which should alert us to bigger structural problems in society. There are a number of areas where humans have achieved a peak of success, a sweet spot, but now that very success is turning on us and threatening to unravel centuries of achievement. On the one hand, economic growth has over centuries led to a steadily improving standard of living, better levels of health and ever increasing life spans. On the other hand, this very affluence is the reason that both our bodies and the planet have gone into a downward spiral, manifested by an ever growing epidemic of obesity in humans, and in a world clogged by greenhouse gasses and waste. Our bodies can no longer cope with the excess of over consumption to which we are encouraged at every turn, and the planet is labouring under the effect of industrialisation and greenhouse gas emissions which are surely exacerbating and possibly causing a level of climate change which is ultimately unsustainable. A fundamental change in thinking is needed both for how we treat our bodies and for our approach to the planet. Each is the only one we have.

8. Performance Consulting A Practical Guide for HR and Learning Professionals (Large Print 16pt) - Dana Gaines Robinson

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £31.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

In 1995 the first edition of Performance Consulting introduced a concept which has since become a cornerstone of the human resource, learning and organizational development fields: training and HR solutions do not take place in a vacuum but must be tied to an organization's business goals. Performance consulting is a process in which a client and consultant partner to achieve business goals by optimizing workgroup performance.
In this updated edition, Dana and Jim Robinson draw on what they've learned since the first edition was published twelve years ago, providing both a robust conceptual framework and improved tools and techniques to help the reader move from the traditional role to that of a Performance Consultant. They show readers how to form partnerships with management, help to identify performance required to ensure that business goals are achieved and assist management in taking actions needed for performance to change. They also illustrate the ''how - to's'' for assisting management to identify the performance required to achieve business goals; and determining the degree to which the work environment supports and encourages the performance required.
Effective HR and learning consultants master both the ''science'' (the analytical and assessment techniques) and the ''art'' (the consultative and partnering practices) of performance consulting. For the science of performance consulting, dozens of analytic tools, templates and assessment techniques are provided in the book. Regarding the art, the Robinsons describe the concepts and practices of ACT - building Access, Credibility and Trust - with business managers. In addition, two brand new chapters are dedicated to the skills of reframing requests for solutions into discussion of business goals and performance requirements; and Initiating business goals discussions with business managers and identifying strategic opportunities to partner with those managers in a proactive manner.
Performance Consulting Toolkit - The second edition of Performance Consulting references graphic and adaptable tools that can be downloaded to support the performance consulting work the Robinsons describe. These tools are available to purchase and download from this product page. See the Table of Contents link for the full listing of the tools. Some tools (in Adobe PDF) can be printed and shared; others (in Microsoft Word) can be adapted to your specific needs and application requirements.

9. Perseverance (Large Print 16pt) - Asante Salam, Margaret Wheatley

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £16.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

Perseverance is designed to offer guidance, challenge, clarity and consolation to all the people doing their work day - by - day. The topics are not the usual inspiring, feel good, rah - rah messages. Instead, Wheatley focuses on the situations, feelings, and challenges that can, over time, cause us to give up or lose our way. Perseverance is a discipline - it's a day - by - day decision not to give up. Therefore, we have to notice the moments when we feel lost or overwhelmed or betrayed or exhausted and note how we respond to them. And we have to notice the rewarding times, when we experience the joy of working together on something hard but worthwhile, when we realize we've made a small difference. Each topic is a brief essay, meant to be read as needed. (The book is not intended to be read through all at once.) You can thumb through the book and find what you need or what attracts you in the moment. Every essay names a behavior or dynamic, puts it into a broader human or timeless perspective, and offers ways for the reader to either live with or transcend that dynamic. The reader is also challenged by the direct voice of the book. Wheatley wants people to be able to see themselves, their situation, and to assume responsibility for changing the situation or their reaction to it if it's one that troubles them. (There deliberately are no examples of other people - the reader is the example; their personal experience is the only case material.) The content (essays and quotes) is drawn from many spiritual traditions and diverse cultures. The book is deeply grounded spiritually and also quite inclusive - accessing human experience and wisdom from many sources. Both this grounding and inclusiveness support the essential message - human being throughout time and history have persevered. We're just the most recent ones to face these challenges.

10. Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant Volume 2/2 Large Print Edition - Ulysses S. Grant

Largeprint (Hardback) Our price: £30.00  - Click book title for availability and further details

Born in 1822, Grant was the son of an Ohio tanner. He went to West Point rather against his will and graduated in the middle of his class. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Grant was appointed by the governor to command an unruly volunteer regiment, quickly rising to the rank of brigadier general of volunteers. In February 1862, he took Fort Henry and attacked Fort Donelson. When the Confederate commander asked for terms, Grant replied, “No terms except an unconditional and immediate surrender can be accepted.” The Confederates surrendered, and President Lincoln promoted Grant to major general of volunteers. At Shiloh in April, Grant fought one of the bloodiest battles in the West and came out less well. Lincoln fended off demands for his removal by saying, “I can’t spare this man—he fights.” For his next major objective, Grant then maneuvered and fought skillfully to win Vicksburg, the key city on the Mississippi, cutting the Confederacy in two.
