Faye Longchamp and Joe Wolf Mantooth have traveled to Neshoba County, Mississippi, to help excavate a site near Nanih Waiya, the sacred mound where tradition says the Choctaw nation was born. When farmer Carroll Calhoun refuses the archaeologists' request to investigate an ancient Native American mound, Faye and her colleagues are disappointed. But his next action breaks their hearts: he tries to bulldoze the huge relic to the ground. Faye and Joe rush to protect history with their bodies, if necessary. The situation grows more dangerous as Choctaws arrive to defend the mound and the farmer's white and black neighbors come to defend his property rights. A popular young sheriff is able to defuse the situation, but tempers are short. That night, Calhoun is found dead, his throat sliced with a handmade stone blade. Was he killed by an archaeologist angered by his wanton destruction of history? Did a Choctaw take up arms to defend an embattled heritage? Did someone decide to even the score with an old rival? The sheriff is well - aware that Faye and Joe were near the spot where Calhoun's body was found. The whole county saw their confrontation with him over the mound. And their combined knowledge of stone tools is impressive. They had motive, means, and opportunity - but so did almost everyone in Neshoba County.

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £60.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

Since the 1950s, anthropologist Sidney W. Mintz has been at the forefront of efforts to integrate the disciplines of anthropology and history. Author of Sweetness and Power: The Place of Sugar in Modern History and other groundbreaking works, he was one of the first scholars to anticipate and critique ''globalization studies.'' However, a strong tradition of epistemologically sophisticated and theoretically informed empiricism of the sort advanced by Mintz has yet to become a cornerstone of contemporary anthropological scholarship. This collection of essays by leading anthropologists and historians serves as an intervention that rests on Mintz's rigorously historicist ethnographic work, which has long predicted the methodological crisis in anthropology today. Contributors to this volume build on Mintzean interdisciplinarity to provide productive ways to theorize the everyday life of local groups and communities, nation-states, and regions and the interconnections among them. Consisting of theoretical and case studies of Latin America, North America, the Caribbean, and Papua New Guinea, Empirical Futures demonstrates how Mintzean perspectives advance our understanding of the relationship among empirical approaches, the uses of ethnographic and historical data and theory-building, and the study of these from both local and global vantage points.

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £24.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

When I first read E. M. Bounds' eight books on prayer, I was certain there was no need for anyone else to ever write another book on prayer, that Bounds had said it all, and said it much better than anyone else could possibly say it. I felt the same way when I reread the eight books about three years later, and the several times I read them after that. I especially liked his book on The Possibilities of Prayer. It opened my mind and heart to how unlimited prayer is. A wonderful book - just wonderful! And all eight of his books on prayer are in this one volume - what a treasure!'' (Harold J. Chadwick) This edition is in two volumes. The second volume ISBN is 9781459633308.

18. EL ARTE CUBANO EN EL EXILIO - Armando Álvarez Bravo

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £20.95  - Click book title for availability and further details

Armando Alvarez Bravo has born in Cuba in 1938. Poet, literary critic, essayist, narrator, professor, editor and journalist, he is a member of the Cuban Academy of Language, correspondent to the Spanish Royal Academy and North American Academy of the Spanish Language, as well as founder and ex-president to the PEN Club of Cuban Exile Writers. Author to over 40 books, he is considered one of Cuba's best poets. There was much censorship and social breakdown in Cuba after 1959. During this time, all sectors of creativity (be it literary, plastic arts, music and/or thought) were the subject of fierce censorship. It was in exile where Cuban artists found the opportunity to do the work they had envisioned, while also struggling to cope with a new way of life and culture- to which they had arrived without resources of any kind. It was not until the 1980's that plastic artistic creations begin to be recognized and developed as a way of dealing with many adverse factors. This fact coincides with the arrival in Miami of the poet and critic, Armando Alvarez Bravo, who begins to publish a Sunday column dedicated to Cuban and international art- a feat that contributes decisively to his popularity. In Miami, we now see the emergence of galleries and an intensification of activities that make up a space for the visual arts. Álvarez Bravo's reviews and critiques constituted a decisive contribution to the acquaintanceship of several generations of Cuban artists and his column was the only source of appreciation for these artists. In the pages of El arte cubano en el exilio are reviews carefully chosen by the author. They span the course of over two decades, where the lives of the artists are examined, as well as the essence and identity of their work. El arte cubano en el exilio secures the spirit, essence and values of Cuban art of an atrocious era.
