Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: 11.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

‘Since she was valorous, she said she was a man, and since Mahishan was speaking of love, he was feminine... If she was a combination of feminine and masculine qualities, why could he too not be a combination of the masculine and feminine?’

Setting the stage with the Asura Mahishan’s doomed love for the beautiful Devi, Ambai deftly combines myth and tradition with contemporary situations. In the title story, the woman who is mother, daughter, solver of all problems for her family, finds that it is only a black spider on a wall in a deserted guesthouse with whom she can share her own pain and suffering; in Burdensome Days, Bhramara enters a world of politics that turns her music into a commodity; while in A Moon to Devour, it is through her lover’s mother that Sagu learns that marriage is not a necessity for motherhood.

Like the strains of the veena that play again and again in this masterful concert of stories, journeys too weave in and out. By train or bus or autorickshaws, each journey takes one into a different facet of human nature: the power of caste over the most basic of bodily needs like thirst; the simple generosity of a mentally afflicted child who loves the colour blue; the loneliness of dying amongst strangers, and the final journey of a veena whose owner herself had gone before it into another world. As in most of her writing, women are central to Ambai’s stories, but so too is her deep understanding of, as she puts it, ‘the pulls and tensions’ between the many different things that make up life and ultimately, create a story.

4. An Elegant Young Man (Large Print 16pt) - Luke Carman

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: 16.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

For a long time Western Sydney has been the political flash-point of the nation, but it has been absent from Australian literature. Luke Carman's first book of fiction is about to change all that: a collection of monologues and stories which tells it how it is on Australia's cultural frontier. His young, self-conscious but determined hero navigates his way through the complications of his divorced family, and an often perilous social world, with its Fobs, Lebbos, Greek, Serbs, Grubby Boys and scumbag Aussies, friends and enemies. He loves Whitman and Kerouac, Leonard Cohen and Henry Rollins, is awkward with girls, and has an imaginary friend called Tom. His sensitivity in a tough environment makes life difficult for him - he is anything but an elegant young man. Carman's style is packed with thought and energy: it captures the voices of the street, and conveys fear and anger, beauty and affection, with a restless intensity.

8. Contrivances (Large Print 16pt) - David Balzer

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: 19.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

This debut collection of stories - featuring a talk - show host and her talking hand, a women's activity group that writes to prisoners, and a poncho - making nudist - is as unique as it is compelling. Set in their own melodramatic worlds, the stories take inspiration from Old Hollywood, Gothic novels, art - world gossip, and maybe a Lifetime movie or two. Balzer's observations are as sharp as Flaubert's, and his characters are drawn with the complexity of George Saunders (and the wit of George Sanders). Beautifully illustrated throughout, Contrivances proves that tragedy is comedy when you play with it long enough.

'Quirky, Sedaris - style musings with unexpected theatrical trimmings.'' - Time Out Chicago These days, reality can be hard to swallow. How do we get to the end of day, let alone the end of the week? Some people drink, others get therapy, but all of us - hidden in the secret places in the backs of our minds - have fantasies. These are what we wish for, fight for, live for. Maybe yours is a pretty girl. Maybe it's a better job. Maybe its the love that'll swoop down makes everything seem okay. It's the fantasies that'll save us, but still - they're a dangerous thing. That pretty girl may not be so pretty tomorrow; that perfect job may not really exist; and what happens to love when you're so lost in a fantasy you can't see what's right in front of your face? The stories in Everyone Remain Calm explore the lines between fantasy and reality - how we move between the two in a crazy attempt to make our lives better. It's a hard journey - we get anxious, panicked, fearful, lost - our pulse quickens, shoulders tighten. We forget to breathe. These stories are a reminder.

17. How I Came to Haunt My Parents (Large Print 16pt) - Natalee Caple

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: 16.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

How I Came to Haunt My Parents is storytelling for parents on the verge of a nervous breakdown. In this beautifully written suite of short fiction Natalee Caple explores fables from the dark side of adulthood and imagines what moral Aesop may have offered to a mother who gave birth to a murderous dictator. Caple's animals and humans are imbued with modern complexity as they confront sex, death, and history, but her stories are as witty as they are profoundly lucid. How I Came to Haunt My Parents is proof of Caple's status as one of the great prose stylists currently writing. Praise for Natalee Caple: ''Moving...unsettling.'' - The New York Times on The Heart Has Its Own Reason ''A brilliant story - teller.'' - D.M. Thomas, author of The White Hotel ''Natalee Caple writes with sensual and captivating detail of people whose dreams drive them to unanticipated extremities.'' - Catherine Bush, author of The Rules of Engagement

18. Immoderate Men Stories - Shikhandin

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: 10.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

Over eleven wide-ranging stories, this collection deftly captures the world of men; the desires that drive them, and the impulses which bring them down.

A grandfather sits on a park bench, ruminating upon the beauty of his daughter-in-law and the perfidy of his son who has cast him out of their lives. Business tycoon Dev has been fixated upon Priti, his college mate, all his life, but it is only after his death, after a visit to Dev’s lawyers, that Priti understands why he left her a room full of presents. Manish comes home to his wife of many decades, hoping to surprise her with a game from their youth, but what he sees happening on their marital bed shakes his very foundations. And a man joins five friends in a teashop with a story about the delicate, delectable flesh of the Grand Canyon pygmy ape, and turns their world upside down.

Written in lyrical prose, Immoderate Men is a wise, witty, immensely readable book of stories by a writer with considerable insight into the workings of the human mind.
