4. The Sleeping Beauty and Other Tales - Charles Perrault

Largeprint (Hardback) Our price: 16.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

Five classic fairy tales by Charles Perrault illustrated by Walter Crane (40 colour illustrations): Little Red Riding Hood; The Master Cat, or Puss in Boots; Blue Beard; The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods; and Cinderella, or The Little Glass Slipper.

Walter Crane was a prominent book illustrator of the 19th century. In cooperation with Edmund Evans, he designed picture books printed in colour, which became the most popular children's books at the time thanks to their high level of craftsmanship and low price. Crane's style shows the influence of the art of the Renaissance and Japanese prints (ukiyo-e). He designed his books according to the belief that "children, like the ancient Egyptians, appear to see most things in profile and like definite statements in design. They prefer well-defined forms and bright, frank colour. They don't want to bother about three dimensions. They can accept symbolic representations. They themselves employ drawing ... as a kind of picture-writing and eagerly follow a pictured story." Crane's work set the standards of taste in the Victorian children's book industry and earned him a reputation as "the father of the illustrated children's book".

13. The Lost Soul (Large Print 16pt) - Gabrella Pierce

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: 19.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

No book has changed our understanding of ourselves more than ''Darwin's Origin of Species''. It caused a sensation on its first day of publication in 1859 and went on to become an international bestseller. The idea that living things gradually evolve through natural selection profoundly shocked its Victorian readers, calling into question what had been for many the unshakeable belief that there was a Creator. In this book, Janet Browne, Charles Darwin's foremost biographer, shows why ''Darwin's Origin of Species'' can fairly claim to be the greatest science book ever published. She describes the genesis of Darwin's theories, explains how they were initially received and examines why they remain so contentious today. Her book is a marvellously readable account of the work that altered forever our knowledge of what it is to be human.

15. Chekhov The Comic Stories (Large Print 16pt) - Harvey Pitcher, Anton Pavlovich Chekhov

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: 19.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

By the time he was 28, Anton Chekhov had published more than 500 short works of fiction, about half of them comic stories and farces. Since then, it has been well documented that these works, dashed off while he was ''chasing two hares at once'' - his medical career and his modest literary pursuits - were carried out largely to pay the bills. Harvey Pitcher has selected and translated approximately forty of these short stories, all of which reflects a genius for comedy which is as fresh and entertaining now as it was then: simple sketches that are like verbal cartoons or comic scripts; outrageous parodies and stories with a comic twist; satirical and subversive sketches that anticipate the anti - authoritarian attitudes of his later work and excursions into the absurd that foreshadow his unconventional approach to stage dialogue. Originally published by Andre Deutsch in 1988, this is the first time the book has been available in paperback. It has been revised by the author to include fourteen brand new stories. Publication coincides with the centenary of Chekhov's death.

16. The Denniston Rose (Large Print 16pt) - Jenny Pattrick

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: 24.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

A number one bestseller, this favourite New Zealand novel captures a real 19th century community. The bleak coal - mining settlement of Denniston, isolated high on a plateau above New Zealand's West Coast, is a place that makes or breaks those who live there. At the time of this novel - the 1880s - the only way to reach the makeshift collection of huts, tents and saloons is to climb aboard an empty coal - wagon to be hauled 2000 feet up the terrifyingly steep Incline - the cable - haulage system that brings the coal down to the railway line. All sorts arrive here to work the mines and bring out the coal: ex - goldminers down on their luck; others running from the law, or from a woman, or worse. They work alongside recruited English miners, solid and skilled, who scorn these disorganised misfits and want them off the Hill. Into this chaotic community come five - year - old Rose and her mother, riding up the Incline, at night, during a storm. No one knows what has driven them there, but most agree the mother must be desperate to choose Denniston; worse, to choose that drunkard Jimmy Cork as bedfellow. The mother has her reasons and her plans, which she tells no one. The indomitable Rose is left to fend for herself, struggling to secure a place in this tough and often aggressive community. The Denniston Rose is about isolation and survival. It is the story of a spirited child, who, in appalling conditions, remains a survivor.

19. JENNET now she wants the children - Karen Perkins

Largeprint (Hardback) Our price: 21.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

Jennet will have your heart and your fear in equal measure’

‘Through Jennet we see how cruelty can drive even the most ordinary people to hatred and, in Jennet's case, evil’

Yorkshire is in the grip of a heatwave, and Thruscross Reservoir has dried up to reveal the remains of the drowned village of Thores-Cross beneath.

Playing in the peaty mud which coats the valley floor, four-year-old Clare Wainwright finds an old inkpot, and can’t wait to show it to her best friend, Louise. But when Emma sees it, her reaction is shocking, and both families are plunged into their worst nightmares.

Emma knows what the inkpot portends:

Jennet has woken.

Now she wants the children.

This is not a gore-ridden, jump-scare horror story. This is more real than that. Jennet is a story about the horrific things that people do to each other, and the way we react to that maltreatment – which does not always end with death.

Jennet’s story is a horror story because it’s not necessarily fiction. It reflects the way women were treated in the time that Jennet lived. It reflects the psychology of the abuse cycle. And it reflects real life. All of it.

If, as I believe, the spirit does not die when the physical body dies, then how many spirits are looking for vengeance today?

What wrongs will you want to right when you pass through that veil? What will I?

This is the conclusion of Jennet’s story, which began in The Haunting of Thores-Cross. I hope she finds peace. I really do.
