2. The Last Days of Jeanne d'Arc (16pt Large Print Edition) - Ali Alizadeh

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £27.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

Jeanne is a young woman from rural France. She's a knight who wears men's clothing. The English call her Joan of Arc. Jeanne has led France to victory in epic battles. She hears ghostly voices and has unspeakable desires. The English want to burn her. Her king has abandoned her. Her heart has been broken. Her heart cannot be burnt. This is her story, and the story of her beloved. Ali Alizadeh's novel The Last Days of Jeanne d'Arc is a provocative new portrait of the life of one of history's most fascinating figures. Countless books have been written about the young Frenchwoman who claimed to hear the voices of saints, led the armies of France in the war against England in the Middle Ages, and was captured and burnt for heresy by her enemies. Based on a rigorous study of the historical material, The Last Days of Jeanne d'Arc provides the first serious dramatisation of Jeanne's sexuality. Alizadeh uses an innovative storytelling technique that weaves together multiple narrative perspectives to tell the story of a courageous young woman who, driven by a passion for justice and forbidden desire, changes the course of Western history.

4. American Dervish A Novel - Ayad Akhtar

Largeprint (Hardback) Our price: £26.00  - Click book title for availability and further details

Hayat Shah is a young American in love for the first time. His normal life of school, baseball, and video games had previously been distinguished only by his Pakistani heritage and by the frequent chill between his parents, who fight over things he is too young to understand. Then Mina arrives, and everything changes.

Mina is Hayat's mother's oldest friend from Pakistan. She is independent, beautiful and intelligent, and arrives on the Shah's doorstep when her disastrous marriage in Pakistan disintegrates. Even Hayat's skeptical father can't deny the liveliness and happiness that accompanies Mina into their home. Her deep spirituality brings the family's Muslim faith to life in a way that resonates with Hayat as nothing has before. Studying the Quran by Mina's side and basking in the glow of her attention, he feels an entirely new purpose mingled with a growing infatuation for his teacher.

When Mina meets and begins dating a man, Hayat is confused by his feelings of betrayal. His growing passions, both spiritual and romantic, force him to question all that he has come to believe is true. Just as Mina finds happiness, Hayat is compelled to act -- with devastating consequences for all those he loves most.

American Dervish is a brilliantly written, nuanced, and emotionally forceful look inside the interplay of religion and modern life. Ayad Akhtar was raised in the Midwest himself, and through Hayat Shah he shows readers vividly the powerful forces at work on young men and women growing up Muslim in America. This is an intimate, personal first novel that will stay with readers long after they turn the last page.

6. All Fall Down (16pt Large Print Edition) - Cassandra Austin

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £27.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

When a bridge in the small outback town of Mululuk mysteriously collapses, the town is cut off from the world, and its citizens from each other. As the locals try to work out why the bridge fell and what it will take to replace it, old rivalries, forgotten romances and primitive drives come to the fore. Teenaged Rachel has come from 'the city' to stay with her uncle after her home life has fallen apart, and she quickly becomes involved in the quest for the truth about the bridge. Father Nott, the local Franciscan priest, is trying to get the hysterical townsfolk to see sense, particularly his gossip-mongering friend Gussy. Shane, Janice and Craig find themselves at the heart of a devastating love triangle, with deadly ramifications that will reverberate far beyond the three of them. And the mysterious Charlie, a scruffy, charismatic alcoholic with a dark past, has a terrifying idea about what it takes to keep a bridge standing. In a town that keeps its secrets like it builds its houses - underground - Charlie's is the most dangerous of all. Wry, rich and unsettling, All Fall Down is a starkly Australian gothic novel about a community divided, and a chilling, archaic belief about what must be done to reunite it. 'Cassandra Austin beautifully evokes the feel of the outback, the heat and that red dirt.' Herald Sun 'Strange and spooky, this work is not so much a thriller as a small human drama brushed up with red dirt mysticism.' Weekly Review 'Affairs, past insults, tested friendships and bad habits are all laid bare as Austin weaves her complex plot between shifting perspectives in sleek, elegant prose.' Australian Book Review

In 1963, Jimmy Wynn was the second most famous man in America. The comedian's uncanny impression of the President made him a star. But when the genuine article died in a hail of bullets on a sunny afternoon in New Orleans, Jimmy's career met a fate almost as grisly. What happened to the funny man afterward was a mystery no one cared to solve. Nearly 25 years later, Nathan Grant, an ambitious young journalist, discovers the trail Jimmy cut through the entertainment netherworld. He soon realizes this forgotten court jester may have played a very serious part in the country's favourite conspiracy theory. Grant's strange and increasingly dangerous odyssey takes him from a dingy New York record store to the showrooms of Las Vegas, a ghost town in the Mojave Desert, and even a dinner theatre in Niagara Falls. A dark comedy about the cost of fame, Jason Anderson's Showbiz is the story of a man who became a punchline and a writer who is desperate to find out how the rest of the joke goes.

13. Say You'll Be Mine (Large Print Edition) - Julia Amante

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £16.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

Told through the eyes of current and former Navy SEALs, EYES ON TARGET is an inside account of some of the most harrowing missions in American history -- including the mission to kill Osama bin Laden and the mission that wasn't, the deadly attack on the US diplomatic outpost in Benghazi where a retired SEAL sniper with a small team held off one hundred terrorists while his repeated radio calls for help went unheeded.

The book contains incredible accounts of major SEAL operations -- from the violent birth of SEAL Team Six and the aborted Operation Eagle Claw meant to save the hostages in Iran, to key missions in Iraq and Afganistan where the SEALs suffered their worst losses in their fifty year history -- and every chapter illustrates why this elite military special operations unit remains the most feared anti-terrorist force in the world.

We hear reports on the record from retired SEAL officers including Lt. Cmdr. Richard Marcinko, the founder of SEAL Team Six, and a former Commander at SEAL team Six, Ryan Zinke, and we come away understanding the deep commitment of these military men who put themselves in danger to protect our country and save American lives. In the face of insurmountable odds and the imminent threat of death, they give all to protect those who cannot protect themselves.

No matter the situation, on duty or at ease, SEALs never, ever give up. One powerful chapter in the book tells the story of how one Medal of Honor winner saved another, the only time this has been done in US military history.

EYES ON TARGET includes these special features:

  • A detailed timeline of events during the Benghazi attack
  • Sample rescue scenarios from a military expert who believes that help could have reached the Benghazi compound in time
  • The US House Republican Conference Interim Progress Report on the events surrounding the September 11, 2012, Terrorist Attacks in Benghazi

Through their many interviews and unique access, Scott McEwen and Richard Miniter pull back the veil that has so often concealed the heroism of these patriots. They live by a stringent and demanding code of their own creation, keeping them ready to ignore politics, bureaucracy and -- if necessary -- direct orders. They share a unique combination of character, intelligence, courage, love of country and what can only be called true grit.

They are the Navy SEALs, and they keep their Eyes on Target.

20. HOSTAGE'S DAUGHTER - Sulome Anderson

Largeprint (Paperback) Our price: £19.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

Pai Gow is the biggest gambling game in the world. It is a game played with dice and with 32 Chinese dominoes. Although it is an ancient game, its popularity has greatly increased in recent years and it is now featured in almost every major gambling casino in the world. It is common for a player to bet $5000 (five thousand US dollars) on a single hand of Pai Gow. When I was playing Pai Gow recently in the Oaks Card Room in Emeryville California, I was betting the minimum $10 on my hand of Pai Gow, while the man sitting next to me was betting $5000 on the same hand. Added together, a total of $10,000 (ten thousand dollars) was bet on that one hand. In the Pai Gow game I was playing in, the banker, who is just one of the players and not the house, was matching all the bets of the other players, Thus, that one player stood to win or to lose $10,000 on just that one hand of Pai Gow. Nowadays, almost every major casino in Nevada, Atlantic City and Macao and most other large casinos around the world offer Pai Gow. Most of the big card rooms in California offer Pai Gow as well.
