Death-defying aerial feats, prophetic dreams, and common thugs come together in this pulp tale by Hubbard. Cal Bradley meets with a series of self-destructing airplanes as he competes to win in the National Air Meet, which could gain him fame and lucrative contracts for his company. As he barely escapes death with each flight, Bradley discovers who is behind his technical failures. Though the story is antiquated, the audio production brings it to life through a full cast, sound effects, and musical score. As narrator, R.F. Daley provides a deep, hammy voice that embodies the nostalgic mood of most pulp fiction, and his emphatic delivery brims with energy. A Galaxy hardcover. (Aug.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. 88. JENNET now she wants the children - Karen Perkins

Largeprint (Hardback) Our price: £21.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

Jennet will have your heart and your fear in equal measure’

‘Through Jennet we see how cruelty can drive even the most ordinary people to hatred and, in Jennet's case, evil’

Yorkshire is in the grip of a heatwave, and Thruscross Reservoir has dried up to reveal the remains of the drowned village of Thores-Cross beneath.

Playing in the peaty mud which coats the valley floor, four-year-old Clare Wainwright finds an old inkpot, and can’t wait to show it to her best friend, Louise. But when Emma  sees it, her reaction is shocking, and both families are plunged into their worst nightmares.

Emma knows what the inkpot portends:

Jennet has woken.

Now she wants the children.

This is not a gore-ridden, jump-scare horror story. This is more real than that. Jennet is a story about the horrific things that people do to each other, and the way we react to that maltreatment – which does not always end with death.

Jennet’s story is a horror story because it’s not necessarily fiction. It reflects the way women were treated in the time that Jennet lived. It reflects the psychology of the abuse cycle. And it reflects real life. All of it.

If, as I believe, the spirit does not die when the physical body dies, then how many spirits are looking for vengeance today?

What wrongs will you want to right when you pass through that veil? What will I?

This is the conclusion of Jennet’s story, which began in The Haunting of Thores-Cross. I hope she finds peace. I really do.

92. Knight of Betrayal A Medieval Haunting - Karen Perkins

Largeprint (Hardback) Our price: £19.99  - Click book title for availability and further details

A Haunting Novel of Murder and Betrayal in Medieval England.

A stand-alone paranormal historical thriller in the award-winning Yorkshire Ghost Story collection by Karen Perkins, Knight of Betrayal will plunge you into the vibrant and deadly world of medieval England: Henry II, Thomas Becket - and four murderous knights.

1170, Canterbury Cathedral.

Four knights break sanctuary to brutally murder Archbishop Thomas Becket for their king, Henry II. Running from their crime, the four knights - Hugh de Morville, William de Tracy, Reginald FitzUrse and Richard le Brett - flee north to Knaresborough Castle where Morville is overlord. Initially celebrating ridding their king of the pest that Becket had become, they find themselves increasingly isolated as the Church and public opinion turn against them.

2015, Knaresborough, North Yorkshire.

August is feva time - a celebration and festival of the arts. The Castle Players are to perform a play of their own creation: Knight of Betrayal, based on the events leading up to Becket's murder. Taking the honour very seriously, they work hard to get into character - but are they channelling more than just the characters of the knights they are portraying? As the group of friends begins to disintegrate, concern becomes certainty - this is one opening night that will never be forgotten as life in the small Yorkshire market town of Knaresborough tumbles into horror.

Likened by independent reviewers on Amazon to the Brontë sisters, Edgar Allen Poe, Barbara Erskine and Nathaniel Hawthorne, Karen Perkins' novels are filled with unflinching honesty and an acute understanding of human nature. She explores not only the depths of humanity, but the motivation behind the actions and pain people inflict upon each other, as well as the repercussions of these actions not only in the short term, but also the later generations who live with the implications of the past.

Now, more than 160 years after publication, this book is about to be made into ANOTHER Major Motion Picture.

The latest movie stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Timothée Chalamet, Meryl Streep and Laura Dern. The movie is in the can but is not scheduled to be released until December 25, 2019.

The book has been adapted previously for cinema; twice as silent film and four times with sound in 1933, 1949, 1978 and 1994. Six television series were made, including four by the BBC—1950, 1958, 1970, and 2017. The 2017 BBC series was supported by PBS, and aired in 2018 as part of the Masterpiece anthology. A musical version opened on Broadway in 2005. An American opera version in 1998 was performed internationally and filmed for broadcast on US television in 2001.

What makes this book so popular?

The four girls are 16, 15, 13 and 12 when the book starts. It seems the girls love their mother and want to protect her. Is this the natural condition? Do not girls usually fight with their mothers through their teen age years.

In America all girls of a certain age have read Little Women. Now, we are able to reach countries in Eastern Europe and Asia where the little girls grew up without having had the opportunity to read Little Women. Imagine that!

There is an increased tendency among some publishers to print books with excessively small type so you need to use a magnifying glass to read the book. We are trying to go in the opposite direction, providing a book in large print that is easier to read.

Four teenaged sisters and their mother, Marmee, live in a new neighborhood based in genteel poverty. Having lost all his money, their father is acting as a pastor, miles from home, involved in the American Civil War. The women face their first Christmas without him.
